Your Plumber Will Take Care Of You

Posted by Green Thumb on November 20, 2014 in Building & Construction with Comments closed |

If you are a homeowner, you are going to need the help of a plumber sooner or later. After all, you have pipes running throughout your home. Sooner or later, one of them is going to give you trouble.

If you have a drain that is clogged, set up an appointment with a plumber today. Usually, this is something that can be fixed in a fairly reasonable amount of time. Your plumber has a special tool that is going to work much better than any liquid drain cleaner ever could.

Maybe you have a kitchen faucet that won’t quit dripping. You have tried everything you can think of and you still have a drip. If this is the case, get on the phone with your plumber. It is a simple fix that only takes a few minutes. By making the decision to schedule this appointment, you could be saving yourself quite a bit of money over the course of a year.

If you have noticed that you have moisture underneath your bathroom sink, this is something that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. After all, moisture means that you have a leak. If you have a leak, you are going to have water damage. This is something that could end up costing you a lot of money to repair.

Maybe you have a toilet that runs every time you flush it. This is another excellent way to waste a lot of water. Not to mention the fact that you will always have the sound of running water inside your home. Your plumber can replace some parts inside your toilet that will make its seal tight every time you flush.

There are a number of things to consider when searching for the right plumber for your home. For example, you need someone who is licensed and insured to do this type of work. You need someone who is going to be honest with you about what needs to be done. Obviously, you don’t know a lot about plumbing. This is why you need an honest plumber.

Set up an appointment with your plumber as soon as you notice that something is wrong. Most plumbers are available for emergency appointments. They will come to your home anytime, day or night. Of course, they are also going to charge you for that emergency appointment. Make sure that it is actually an emergency.

What To Do After Your Shop Has Been Burgled?

Posted by Green Thumb on November 9, 2014 in Building & Construction with Comments closed |

While everyone hopes not to experience a burglary, there are pretty eye-opening statistics that suggest that there is a real possibility that it could happen to you.  In the United States, there is a burglary that takes place every 15 seconds.  Therefore, the odds are that you have been a victim or you know someone who has.  Below are a few guidelines on what to do after your shop has been burgled.  Follow these guidelines to stay safe following a burglary:

Personal Safety Must Be Your Main Concern

After discovering the burglary, leave your place of business as quickly as you can and head to somewhere safe like your car or a neighboring shop.  While you might be tempted to hunt down and confront the burglars, you will be a lot safer if you remain quiet, avoid them and take yourself away the situation.

Get in Contact with the Authorities

When you have secured yourself in a safe location, call the police.  Give them all the details you have about the break in and let them know if you think the culprit is still in your place of business.

Safeguard the Evidence

Await the arrival of the police before re-entering your shop and make every attempt to minimize touching areas and items that may have the fingerprints of the burglars on them.  Safes and door handles are included among the items to avoid touching.

Get in Touch with Your Insurance Company

After the incident report has been taken by the police, your insurance company should be notified about the burglary.  You must then file a claim for all items that are missing or broken.

Start the Process of Healing and Being Proactive

It is totally normal to feel anxious, victimized or even angry subsequent to someone breaking into your shop.  Begin the process of healing by talking to friends, family members or a certified counselor to work through your emotions.   The proactive steps you could take include changing the locks on all the external doors, upgrading or purchasing a security system, ensuring that your belongings are insured and taking classes in self-defense.

In addition, if the burglar gained access to your shop by breaking a window, you should hire the services of a glazier to repair or replace the glass.

It is difficult to know how to react in a crisis; however these guidelines can assist you in working toward a safe and fast resolution.  Remaining calm, ensuring your safety and being smart are the keys to recovering from a burglary.

Renovation Ideas That Can Increase Home Value

Posted by Green Thumb on November 5, 2014 in Home Renovations with Comments closed |

RenovationsHomeowners who have plans of selling their house in the future should always consider good quality home renovation projects. Buyers are easily turned off with houses that look old or needs a lot of repair. In order to increase the value of your home, you should renovate everything that needs to be changed or upgraded. You may need the kitchen area, dining room, bedroom, living room and the main bathroom to be fully or partially renovated. Here are some ideas that can help you with your plans of renovating your home to increase its value.

Change Your Windows

The windows have a very strong influence in changing the overall look of your house. If you have an outdated window design, it is time to make some changes and renovation. In addition, many buyers are looking for windows that can contribute to the energy efficiency of the house. A new window can give you large savings if it can help you save more on electricity bills by letting in more sunlight. Therefore, it is time to take down that single pane window and look for newer, energy efficient design windows for your home.

Add a Deck

One of the best ways to upgrade the look of your home is by adding a deck. Many people want to have an outdoor living space in their backyard. When your house becomes more appealing, the value increases several times. Plan on the size of your deck and the materials you will use. You can also place your deck on your backyard or in the front yard. High value houses always have beautiful decks incorporated in their property.

Add or Renovate the Bathroom

If you feel that there are not enough bathrooms in the house or there are extra rooms and spaces that are not being used, then you can add another bathroom. People also like having a more luxurious looking bathroom in their home. So it can be a good idea to give your old bathroom a proper facelift with new additions and accessories like tubs, toilets, doors and fixtures.

New Interior and Exterior Paint

The cheapest remodeling and renovation idea for your home is a new paint color on the outside and inside. Think of a new color that would have a huge impact on the buyers of the house. It will not necessarily have a huge increase in the overall value of the house, but a new paint would surely make the house more attractive and pleasing to the eyes.

Upgrade the Kitchen

They say that the kitchen is one of the most important parts of the house. Upgrading the kitchen is definitely going to improve and increase the house value. You can add modern appliances, new floorings or countertops. So many factors can add overall value to the kitchen such as the lighting, counters, faucets and many more.  A full renovation of the kitchen is a great idea for improving your house value.

Homeowners should always consider their house as an investment. In order to ensure that your investment will give you huge returns, you should keep it in good condition through the years. These are just some of the home renovation ideas that can have a huge positive impact on your home. Inspect your living area, bedroom, dining room, bathroom and kitchen to see if there are ways on how you can improve your home without spending too much.

Building Simple Box Columns – DIY Front Porch Home Improvement!

Posted by Green Thumb on January 24, 2015 in Home & Garden with Comments closed |

Changing the Exterior look and adding a little curb appeal is easier than you think! Here’s just one of many One day projects that can bring your dated or lackluster house a little style. Box columns are easily constructed using tools many homeowners already have or can be borrowed from your handy neighbor. I’m using everyday, dimensional lumber from lowes and home depot. The particular boards are 2X8’s and 2X6’s. These columns are sitting on top of brick posts with concrete caps. The base block for the wood column, made from pressure treated lumber, is attached with an expanding masonry bolt to the concrete cap. Everything else is constructed with exterior grade decking screws. All screws are recessed into the wood with a special bit that drills a pilot and counter sink hole, it also keeps the wood from splitting.

Check back for more videos soon, this is the first of many. And if you’d like to see more, I also have two other YouTube channels. One, “The Homestead Craftsman” is all about being a craftsman, tools, wood, metal, leather, making, fixing and doing.
The second channel is “Square Inch” is specifically on the topic of another TINY house on wheels that I’m building. Check them both out and see what you think.
